Night the birds have all flown south, their wings cutting
through clouds leading them to warmer places –

warm bodies laid in sand as speckles cling to feather
fabrics –

save for single yellow bird, who wanders bar
with drink in hand and sadly looks my way

oh face familiar, such a sorrow, same eyes illuminated
by dim lamp light, same look as when we last made love

it's been a couple years and as she passes past, our eyes meet
and I remember –

no matter how many drinks I swallow, my stomach
still feels tight, as I light my cigarette, blowing smoke-thought into

that's why the alcohol takes a while
to kick in,
usually requiring a strong
cup of coffee,
or the kind of company,
that makes the cheeks
flush, blushing foolishly
at bar-room tables,
